We tend to put people on these pedestals, this high up place that encompasses standards that we deem are unattainable by anyone else. Unfortunately, we sometimes lose sight of our own worth in the bright light that reflects off these self-made pedestals. If we take a moment to pull away from what we desire and see that we ourselves are something to be coveted and looked upon with the same admiration we would see that we are just people. Just two people who happen to share a mutual feeling of trust and respect.
Don't get me wrong, It hasn't always been rainbows and butterflies. There were plenty of thunderstorms and vicious strikes of lightning that should've burned our bridge forever. There were times I wanted to erase you, times I needed you, and times I couldn't express in words what I thought about you. Yet here we are, standing together.
My heart wasn't stolen all at once. No, you see he unknowingly did it in pieces. First with his jeans, the tears in them caught my eye. Soon after it was the way he winked when words couldn't be exchanged. Next thing I knew it was his voice when he sang and his groggy voice when he would wake up. The way we'd show each other songs and he'd dance to the ones he liked. It was his boyish smile as he would say good-bye and the way he'd fix his hair in the wind. You see, it was all these little insignificant things that took me in piece by piece and captivated me.
I've come to learn that caring about someone isn't about a pedestal at all, in fact pedestals should have no place in the dating world, period. How can you possibly care about someone if you view them as a trophy? It isn't until this idolization is removed that you see them for who they are; faults and insecurities, dreams and ambitions. This is where love is found., in a place they don't reveal to everyone, a place they hold safe for themselves. If they give you a glimpse into that place, you're one of the lucky ones.
